Reframing Our Focus
We started our 2022-2023 school year with the following focus:
During our Professional learning session on June 29, 2021, staff spent time revising our student responses and staff reflections and agreed on the below inquiry question to guide us in the coming school year:
How can we engage students in reflecting on and communicating about their learning while making connections to big ideas?
Action Statement:
We landed on 3 different approaches/actions to connect our teaching to the focus question
1) supporting students in self-assessment
2) including core competencies in our planning and teaching
3) providing feedback with formative assessment.
Evidence Statement:
We know that our work with learners is making a difference when students are able to articulate their ideas and what they are learning, and can share how their learning connects to the big ideas.
However, as a staff, we felt that the focus needed to be more clear to every member of our community who reads it. Through committee and staff meetings we have reframed and reworded the focus to the following:
We are focused on improving students' communication of their own learning.
We will focus on Big Ideas through students' reflections.
Actions:
1. Let's make the big ideas very clear to students in all curricular areas (big ideas are visible and explicit)
2. Reflection: What big ideas are you exploring? How are you doing with this learning?
3. Collect Data: TBD
We are currently on Action #1 as a school community.
