McKinney Eagles Continue to Soar with our Literacy Skills
| What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus? | In the Fall and the Spring, all McKinney students had their reading fluency and comprehension assessed. The Fall data helped guide us in our teaching by showing us what areas we needed to focus in on. And the Spring data helped us see the growth in our students. Our initial data indicated that we needed to work on our inferencing skills as readers, which connected nicely to our school-wide SEL goals as well. Our hopes are that as students learn to better infer when they are reading, that they will also then make better inferences when connecting with peers and using their SEL tools. |
| What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? | Specific gaps that we focused in on: -using text features -inferencing -questioning -predicting -summarizing what we have read As a staff, we really zoomed in on inferencing and the natural connections this reading strategy has to our SEL goals. |
| What does the evidence tell us so far? | School-wide, the number of students who could summarize their reading successfully went up by 15%. Inferencing skills went up by 9%. Questioning skills went up by 19%. And the number of students who could successfully use text features went up by 9%. We are proud of the progress made and look forward to continuing the learning next year! Success was coded as students who reached proficiency and/or extending abilities on the RFRA reading assessment. |
| To what extent are the actions making a difference? | Our dedicated staff assessed every single student in the Fall and the Spring on a variety of literacy skills. Teachers then explicitly taught the reading skills to help students improve their literacy abilities. All results indicate an improvement in our students’ ability to use different reading strategies. |
| How will we move forward accordingly? | As a staff we are examining the data and will use that to make adjustments to our focus next school year. |
