McKinney Family Update - September 23, 2023

Greetings, McKinney Community,

I want to express our deep gratitude to the McKinney PAC for hosting a pizza community dinner on our Meet the Staff evening. Your dedication and hard work made this event a resounding success, and I'd like to extend our thanks to all the families and staff who joined in. It was a beautiful reminder of the incredible community spirit that thrives at McKinney.

In our ongoing commitment as a learning organization, last Friday saw all district staff engage in a day of indigenous learning, reinforcing our dedication to truth and reconciliation. Looking ahead, this Friday marks Orange Shirt Day, a moment for us to collectively recognize the legacy of residential schools and the need for continued understanding and healing. Our National Day of Truth and Reconciliation follows on Saturday, September 30th. There will be no school on October 2nd in lieu.

I'd also like to extend warm wishes to our McKinney families observing Yom Kippur this week. Chag Samaeh to you and your loved ones as you observe this significant day of reflection and atonement.

Thank you all for being an integral part of our McKinney family, and here's to another week of growth, unity, and shared experiences.

Orange Shirt Day

By wearing an orange shirt on September 29th, we commit to the enduring truth that EVERY CHILD MATTERS, every day and everywhere.

The Orange Shirt Society was formed in Williams Lake by the founders of Orange Shirt Day to encourage and support communities to recognize Orange Shirt Day and to support reconciliation events and activities. Our goal is to create awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of Indian Residential Schools through Orange Shirt Day activities, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters."

More about Orange Shirt Day can be found here: https://orangeshirtday.org/orange-shirt-day/

We ask that our school community wear Orange shirts on Friday to commemorate this event. We will have an Orange Shirt Day assembly where an indigenous storyteller, Kung Jaadee, will share stories with us.

Some Lower Mainland events to commemorate the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation can be found HERE.

RAM Meeting - October 3, 2023

The Richmond Association for Montessori (RAM) is made up of the families of Montessori students at Manoah Steves, Garden City and James McKinney Elementary schools, who work together with the school district and school administration to support the Montessori program in Richmond.

Our school calendar had an error and said the first RAM Meeting was this week but is October 3rd. The meetings are virtual and all Montessori caregivers are encouraged to attend. A link will be sent out for the meeting to Montessori families.

Cold and Flu Season

As we enter the Fall season, we are already beginning to see students staying home who are not feeling well. If your child is sick and unable to participate fully in routine activities, please keep your child at home until they feel better. We thank you for helping to keep our community healthy.

Important Dates to Remember:

A reminder that our most current important dates can be found on our school calendar:

Thank you, again...

As we look forward to the week ahead, let's carry with us a sense of community and gratitude. Your continued support and engagement make our school a special place. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Together, we'll make the upcoming week as enriching as ever.
