McKinney Family Update - October 28

Monday is Halloween and we are looking forward to having some fun together.

PAC Pumpkin Patch:

Monday the PAC will turn the McKinney field into a giant pumpkin patch. Students will have the opportunity to go out and choose a pumpkin. If you are available at 8:45 am on Monday, the PAC could use some more volunteers to help set-up the pumpkin patch. If you are available to volunteer, please meet by the portables at 8:45 am.

Other pumpkin patch reminders:

  • The field may be muddy. Please ensure students have boots or other waterproof footwear to visit the pumpkin patch
  • Please send your child with a reusable, cloth bag to carry their pumpkin home

Halloween Costumes:

Here are some guidelines to consider when selecting costumes that will be worn at school:

  • Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, or religion are not permitted. A resource to help better clarify this concern is the #IAmNotACostume Campaign which can be found at: http://www.lspirg.org/costumes
  • Students need to be identifiable and visible to ensure safety. Masks, face coverings, or make-up that results in staff being unable to identify students should not be worn.
  • Costumes that depict violence, alcohol or drugs are not appropriate. Fake weapons should not be brought to school.

Another important reminder for older students that attend schools with younger grades, it is everyone’s responsibility to create a safe environment for all students to set a good example and think about how costume choice may impact others in the building.

Halloween Candies:

McMath leadership students are collecting extra candy again this year. The candy becomes part of care packages for the GSM Street Team.

The GSM street teams continue our work on the downtown eastside. Last year we delivered more than 15,000 candy bags and several hundred pairs of socks and other amenities to residents of the neighbourhood.  Our need for candy and donations remains.

If you wish to donate extra candy, there are bins in the office.

Grade 7 Farewell Message:

Dear Families of McKinney Grade 7 parents,

My name is Alli Ridley, and I am a PAC member and mother of a grade 7 student. I am hoping to get a group of grade 7 parents together to form a Grade 7 Farewell 2023 Committee, to make our children’s Grade 7 Farewell a memorable one. In these beginning stages of planning, I am looking for:

  • Parents who are willing and interested to help plan and prep. This would include suggesting ideas, set-up, organizing and potentially helping plan and run fundraisers
  • Donations for a “swag bag” for our grade 7s
  • Monetary donations.

If you can do any of the above-mentioned things, please email Mrs Alli Ridley at (jeroandalli@yahoo.com) by November 15th with your intention to be involved. I will then organize an in-person or zoom meeting to start our planning process. We welcome all families of 2023 grade 7s to get involved and participate in planning these fun events! Thank you so much for your consideration,

Mrs Alli Ridley on behalf of the James McKinney PAC

Kindergarten Registration:

Richmond School District 38 is excited to welcome kindergarten registration applications for children born in 2018, turning 5 in 2023. These children will begin kindergarten in September 2023. Online registration opens on November 1, 2022. Please visit our website http://www.sd38.bc.ca/kindergarten for more information about our online registration process, required documents, important dates and FAQs.

Families are encouraged to register any time during the Priority 1 registration period (November – January) for the best chance at attending their catchment school. All registration applications received anytime during the Priority 1 registration period will receive placement decisions by February 3, 2023.

Instead of in-person information evenings this year, we have posted short videos that provide our new parents with information about the registration process, English Language Learner (ELL) assessments, and District Program Options – Early French Immersion and Montessori. These videos are available in English and Mandarin. Please view the videos at http://www.sd38.bc.ca/kindergarten.

Finally, there will be a Kindergarten Information Evening for parents of students with additional support needs on ZOOM held on November 16 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. A link to the Zoom meeting will be posted on the Kindergarten Registration website closer to the meeting date http://www.sd38.bc.ca/kindergarten

Thank you and please share this information with your friends and family who have Kindergarten aged children!
